Starting your first driving lesson can feel intimidating, especially if you have never sat behind the wheel before. However, professional instructors structure first lessons to build confidence gradually.
Before You Start Driving
Your instructor will begin by:
Checking your provisional driving licence
Discussing any previous driving experience
Explaining how lessons will work
You will not be expected to drive in busy traffic immediately.
Introduction to the Vehicle
You will learn the cockpit drill, which includes adjusting:
The seat
Steering position
Mirrors
Seatbelt
The instructor will explain the pedals, gears (if learning manual), handbrake, and dashboard controls.
Your First Practical Driving Experience
Most first driving lessons focus on:
Moving off safely
Stopping under control
Basic clutch control (manual vehicles)
Steering on quiet residential roads
It is completely normal to stall the engine or feel unsure at first. Learning to drive is a gradual process.
By the end of the lesson, your instructor will usually review your progress and explain what you will practise next time.
