Expert advice on passing the UK theory test, including multiple-choice preparation and hazard perception tips.

Before booking your practical driving test, you must pass the UK theory test. This exam consists of two sections, both of which must be passed during the same sitting.

Multiple-Choice Section

  • 50 questions

  • 57 minutes to complete

  • Pass mark: 43 out of 50

Questions are based on:

  • The Highway Code

  • Road signs

  • Traffic laws

  • Safe driving practices

Hazard Perception Section

  • 14 video clips

  • 15 developing hazards

  • Maximum score: 75

  • Pass mark: 44

You score more points the earlier you identify a developing hazard.

Effective Study Strategies

  • Study the official Highway Code thoroughly

  • Use DVSA-approved revision materials

  • Practise mock tests regularly

  • Avoid random clicking in hazard perception clips

Consistent short study sessions are more effective than last-minute cramming.
