Experience & Expertise

Andy is an automatic driving instructor in Nottingham and an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). He has three years of teaching experience, has taught around 60 learners and brings more than 25 years of driving experience to his lessons.

Previously a technician, Andy is comfortable breaking practical tasks into understandable steps. He helps complete beginners and nervous learners develop vehicle control before building confidence in busier traffic and at larger junctions. His emphasis is on understanding what an action achieves, then practising it until you can repeat it consistently.

Teaching Approach

Andy explains what to look for, what action to take and why. He uses clear verbal guidance, demonstrations and coaching questions, adjusting the balance according to whether you benefit more from an explanation or from trying a skill with support.

For one learner who struggled with parallel parking, Andy broke the manoeuvre into reference points related to the car’s dimensions. Working through the turning points step by step helped the learner improve their control and complete the manoeuvre. He uses repeated practice to help the learner understand the movement rather than simply remember a sequence.

Lessons begin with situations you can manage, with more demanding roads introduced as your confidence develops. Andy gradually reduces his prompts so you take responsibility for observation and planning. As a Cantonese-speaking driving instructor in Nottingham, he offers lessons in Cantonese as well as English and Mandarin.

Local Knowledge

Andy covers Colwick and Chilwell and prepares learners for Nottingham (Colwick) and Nottingham (Chilwell) test centres. Practice around Bardills Roundabout and Bramcote Island focuses on choosing lanes, interpreting signs and adjusting speed before entering a more complex layout.

On roads around Colwick, including Colwick Loop Road and Daleside Road, he helps learners carry their vehicle-control skills into busier conditions. Residential roads and urban routes offer different opportunities to practise positioning, forward planning and responding to other road users.

Training Car

Lessons with Andy take place in an automatic hybrid Honda Jazz equipped with dual controls, a reversing camera and parking sensors. His technical approach is particularly relevant when explaining how steering changes the car’s position during parking.

Andy’s guidance connects reference points with what is happening around the vehicle. Camera and sensor information remains an aid alongside all-round observation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a parking manoeuvre only successful if I get it right on the first attempt?

For learning purposes, the finished position is only part of the picture. Understanding why an adjustment was needed, staying aware of your surroundings and maintaining control also matter. Ask Andy to explain which part of your attempt needs attention rather than judging the whole exercise only by whether it looked perfect immediately.

Why does a parking method sometimes work and sometimes fail?

Small changes in the starting position or steering timing can affect where the car finishes. Instead of assuming that the whole method is wrong, describe where the attempt began to feel different. This gives Andy something specific to review and helps you distinguish an inconsistent starting point from a problem later in the manoeuvre.

Should I count steering-wheel turns when learning to park?

A counting cue may help you remember an explanation, but it does not tell you everything about the car’s position or surroundings. Ask Andy what each part of the movement is intended to achieve. Understanding that purpose is more useful than relying on a number without checking the result.

Can I use online parking tutorials alongside my lessons?

They can introduce ideas, but a tutorial may use a different car, starting position or explanation. If it conflicts with what you have practised, discuss it with Andy before mixing the methods. Bring the specific point that confused you so you can understand the difference rather than collect several competing sets of instructions.

What should I mention if I am changing from another instructor?

Explain what you have already practised, what currently feels reliable and which techniques still need prompts. If you used particular parking cues, mention those too. Previous lesson hours provide some context, but they do not show exactly which skills you can now apply independently.
