On is an automatic driving instructor in Leeds with two years of instructor experience. He has taught more than 60 learners and works particularly with learners who lack confidence at large or busy roundabouts, pupils who struggle with lane choice and road positioning, learners who find meeting traffic and narrow roads difficult, and drivers who need more confidence in busy urban traffic.

Teaching Approach

For complicated roundabouts, On sometimes works backwards from the intended exit so the learner understands how the exit choice affects lane position on approach. He asks learners to describe what they can see before discussing what they should do, which helps identify whether the problem is observation or decision-making.

He uses sketches for complicated roundabouts, showing entry lanes, circulating lanes and exits, then compares the diagram with the actual road markings. His support gradually changes from direct instruction to hints, questions and finally independent decision-making.

For example, a learner who had experienced several unsuccessful tests and was focusing too much on individual faults. On identified the underlying pattern as late planning and shifted the learner’s focus towards reading the road earlier instead of simply practising test routes.

Local Knowledge

On teaches across Leeds, including Headingley, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Moortown, Horsforth, Kirkstall, Meanwood, Pudsey, Farsley and Morley. His lessons use ring-road sections, one-way systems, dedicated turning lanes and residential routes around Roundhay, Moortown and Chapel Allerton.

He mainly prepares learners for Leeds (Fearnville) and Horsforth Driving Test Centres. North Leeds provides useful practice for situations where parked vehicles, traffic islands and oncoming traffic restrict available road space and require early planning.

On enjoys basketball, fitness and watching sport. He says basketball has taught him the importance of looking ahead rather than focusing only on what is directly in front of you, a principle he also uses when teaching forward planning.
