Experience & Expertise

Mike is an automatic driving instructor in Nottingham with PDI status, two years of teaching experience and around 40 learners taught. He brings more than 25 years of driving experience to lessons, with particular attention to car positioning, observation and confidence on busy roads.

Before becoming an instructor, Mike worked as a builder. Practical problem-solving and judging how things fit together are familiar parts of his background, and he brings that approach to helping learners understand the space around their car. His lessons suit complete beginners and nervous learners who find it difficult to judge their distance from the kerb, parked vehicles or other traffic.

Teaching Approach

Mike explains skills through what you can actually see from the driver’s seat. He uses verbal explanations and demonstrations to show where the car should be positioned and why, then gives you time to practise. If a skill remains difficult, he adjusts the pace and repeats the explanation before adding more demanding road situations.

For example, one learner struggled to judge the car’s position on narrower roads. Mike worked on reference points and road positioning in quieter areas before introducing busier roads. As the learner became more familiar with the car, they needed fewer prompts to judge the available space.

As your confidence grows, Mike uses coaching questions and gradually reduces his instructions. The aim is for you to observe, plan and choose your position independently. If you prefer a Cantonese-speaking driving instructor in Nottingham, Mike can explain lessons in Cantonese, English or Mandarin.

Local Knowledge

Mike covers Colwick and Chilwell and prepares learners for Nottingham (Colwick) and Nottingham (Chilwell) test centres. Around Colwick Loop Road and Daleside Road / Daleside Road East, his teaching focuses on looking ahead, choosing a suitable lane and preparing for the next junction.

Practice progresses from residential roads to busier urban roads and roundabouts. This gives you opportunities to develop the positioning skills introduced earlier while also responding to pedestrians, cyclists and changing traffic. The purpose is to apply these skills wherever you drive, rather than depend on memorising a test route.

Training Car

Mike teaches in an automatic electric Peugeot e-2008 fitted with dual controls, a reversing camera and parking sensors. During parking practice, he helps you relate the view from the driver’s seat to the position of the vehicle.

The camera and sensors provide additional information, while direct observation and checking around the car remain central to the manoeuvre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the reference points I learn work in a different car?

Not necessarily. Your seating position, the vehicle’s dimensions and the view through its windows can change what a reference point looks like. Treat reference points as a way to understand position, rather than fixed markers that work in every vehicle. Tell Mike if you also practise in another car so you can discuss those differences.

What should I do if I cannot see the reference point clearly?

Tell Mike what you can actually see rather than trying to follow a marker that does not make sense from your seat. A useful explanation needs to match your own view. It is also worth mentioning if you have changed your seat position since the previous lesson.

Should I practise parking at home before learning it in a lesson?

Ask Mike before trying an unfamiliar manoeuvre in private practice. Agreeing what you are ready to practise helps keep that practice consistent with your lessons. Describe the space you have available and who would supervise you; a tight driveway may be quite different from the setting used in a lesson.

How can I explain a positioning problem if I do not know the driving terminology?

Describe the moment when you feel unsure: for example, whether it happens beside parked cars, near the kerb or when another vehicle approaches. You do not need to name a technical fault. Explaining what you see and what worries you gives Mike a clearer starting point than simply saying that your positioning feels wrong.

Does hesitating in a narrow space always mean my judgement is poor?

No. Taking time to assess an uncertain space is different from being unable to judge it. A useful discussion is whether you noticed the available room, understood your options and recognised when you needed to wait. Mention the particular situation to Mike so the feedback relates to the decision you faced.
