Experience & Expertise
Tony is an automatic driving instructor in Derby with PDI status, two years of teaching experience and approximately 40 learners taught. He brings more than 25 years of driving experience to lessons for beginners, nervous learners and those who need more practice at busy junctions and roundabouts.
Before becoming an instructor, Tony worked as a logistics coordinator, where organisation, forward planning and attention to detail were central to his role. Those skills shape his approach to driving tuition: helping you recognise what is coming next and prepare for it before the situation feels rushed.
His instructor training has developed his lesson-planning and explanation skills, which he continues to build through teaching. Tony particularly suits learners who want practical explanations and time to work through one skill before adding another.
Teaching Approach
Tony explains what to observe, when to act and how to use that information to make a decision. He combines clear verbal guidance with demonstrations where helpful, then uses questions to check what you have noticed and why you chose a particular action.
One learner found junctions on the A38 and A52 around Derby difficult because faster traffic and late route choices left little time to prepare. Tony helped them read direction signs earlier and organise their observations, signalling and positioning in advance. Working through the approach helped the learner make smoother transitions through busy dual-carriageway junctions.
For nervous learners, Tony keeps the immediate task manageable rather than asking them to think about the whole journey at once. If a junction or manoeuvre remains difficult, he allows more practice before increasing the challenge. Mistakes become specific points to work on, while progress helps build confidence.
As your judgement develops, Tony reduces prompts and encourages you to plan, check your surroundings and explain your decisions independently. If you would prefer a Cantonese-speaking driving instructor in Derby, he can teach in Cantonese, English or Mandarin.
Local Knowledge
Tony offers lessons across Derby and Burton-on-Trent, with preparation for Derby (Alvaston) driving test centre. His local teaching combines residential streets with busier urban roads, traffic-light-controlled junctions, multi-lane roundabouts and dual carriageways.
Around Raynesway and the A6/A50 connections, practice focuses on preparing for lane choices, observing surrounding traffic and judging opportunities to proceed. On London Road, parked vehicles, bus stops and pedestrian crossings create different demands on your attention, helping you develop observation in an urban setting.
Roads around Sinfin and Chellaston provide opportunities to practise residential junctions and mini-roundabouts before moving between quieter streets and busier main roads. These are useful learning environments, rather than a list of guaranteed test roads. Tony’s aim is to help you apply your skills when the layout or traffic is unfamiliar too.
Training Car
Tony teaches in an automatic electric Peugeot e-2008 equipped with dual controls, a reversing camera and parking sensors. Automatic transmission removes the need to coordinate a clutch and manual gear changes, allowing you to concentrate on vehicle control, observation and planning.
During parking and other manoeuvres, the camera and sensors provide additional information. They work alongside your own observations of the space and road users around the car.

Do I need experience in an electric car before starting lessons with Tony?
No previous electric-car experience is needed to enquire: Tony teaches beginners as well as learners with some driving experience. Tell him if you have used another car before and which controls feel unfamiliar. Experience in a different vehicle can be useful, but it does not mean you should already know how the Peugeot responds.
How can I tell whether I am planning ahead or just remembering a familiar road?
Ask yourself what information led to your decision. Noticing a sign, marking or change in traffic gives you a reason you can apply elsewhere; remembering where you went last time may not. When reviewing a journey with Tony, explain what you noticed as well as which direction you took.
What if I find quieter streets manageable but feel overloaded on faster roads?
Describe the point where things begin to feel difficult—reading signs, following directions, monitoring traffic or controlling speed. These are different demands, even if they happen together. Identifying the specific difficulty gives Tony a clearer starting point than assuming every part of your driving needs to be relearned.
Should I tell Tony if I already have a practical test booked?
Yes. Include the date and test centre when you enquire, along with your recent lesson experience. Tony’s availability, the use of the training car and your preparation all need to be discussed before arrangements are agreed. Having a test date booked does not, on its own, show which skills are ready or which still need practice.
What should I tell Tony if I also practise with a family member?
Explain which car you use, what you have practised and whether any advice differs from your lessons. If two explanations seem to conflict, bring a specific example rather than trying to combine them without understanding why they differ. Discuss suitable practice goals with Tony before attempting skills you have not yet worked on together.
