Andy is an automatic driving instructor in Leeds with two years of instructor experience. He has taught more than 30 learners and has particular experience helping pupils working towards an upcoming practical test, learners transferring from another instructor shortly before their test, learners taking intensive or semi-intensive lessons and drivers who need targeted improvement rather than starting from scratch.

When a learner repeatedly makes the same mistake, Andy changes the teaching method rather than simply asking them to try again. Depending on the situation, he may use a demonstration, diagram or coaching questions.

Teaching Approach

Andy compares similar driving situations and asks the learner what has changed, helping them understand why the same routine cannot always produce the same decision. When a learner says “I don’t know when to go”, he avoids teaching a fixed rule and instead looks at the speed, distance and likely movement of other traffic so the learner can develop judgement.

He may draw a junction from above and ask the learner to trace the route they intended to take, or demonstrate an approach while pointing out the signs, brake lights, road markings, pedestrians and traffic-flow changes he is using.

​

For example, a learner who drove well with instructor support but struggled when prompts were removed. Andy gradually changed from instructions to coaching questions and then introduced unfamiliar roads where the learner had to plan independently.

Local Knowledge

Andy teaches across Leeds, including Headingley, Chapel Allerton, Roundhay, Moortown, Horsforth, Kirkstall, Meanwood, Pudsey, Farsley and Morley. He regularly uses routes around Headingley, Kirkstall, Meanwood and North Leeds, where learners experience pedestrian crossings, bus stops, cycle traffic and roads that change width or layout quickly. Sections of the A660 and A65 are also used to practise maintaining progress while anticipating developing hazards.

He regularly prepares learners for Horsforth and Leeds (Fearnville) Driving Test Centres. The A660 through Headingley is particularly useful for developing attention management around buses, pedestrians, cyclists, side roads and changing vehicle positions.

Andy teaches in an automatic Lexus CT200h with dual controls, a reverse camera and parking sensors. The car is a hybrid.
