Automatic Lessons for Overseas Drivers

Abi provides automatic driving lessons in Birmingham for overseas licence holders, Hong Kong drivers and learners preparing for a UK practical test. She recognises that an experienced overseas motorist may have good vehicle control but still need to adapt observation, lane discipline and roundabout decisions to UK roads.

As an automatic driving instructor in Birmingham, Abi assesses which existing skills transfer safely and which habits require adjustment. Learners can work with an automatic driving instructor in Birmingham who does not assume that all overseas drivers need the same lesson plan.

Abi's lessons are shaped around the learner's existing experience:

  • A confident overseas driver can begin with an assessment rather than repeating every beginner topic.

  • A learner unfamiliar with UK roundabouts can compare their usual decision process with the signs, lane markings, observations and exit planning expected here.

  • A driver with good car control but inconsistent observations can explain what they were thinking, allowing Abi to identify the habit that needs changing.

  • A learner preparing for a UK test can practise making decisions on unfamiliar roads without waiting for translated or step-by-step prompts.

Experience & Expertise

Abi is a PDI with two years of instructor experience, over 10 years of driving experience and more than 60 learners taught. She is not a fully qualified ADI and should be described accurately as a PDI.

Her previous work as a dental secretary required careful communication and helping people feel comfortable in unfamiliar or stressful situations. She brings the same patience and attention to detail to driver training.

As a Cantonese-speaking driving instructor in Birmingham, Abi can discuss UK road layouts and driving habits in Cantonese where appropriate. English and Mandarin tuition are also available.

Teaching Approach

Abi first establishes what a learner already understands, then identifies where the confusion begins. She uses verbal explanations, demonstrations and coaching questions and asks experienced drivers to explain their own decisions so that habits needing adjustment become clear.

One overseas driver controlled the car confidently but found UK roundabouts and lane discipline unfamiliar. Abi focused on reading signs earlier, choosing the lane before reaching the roundabout and planning the exit. Repeated practice helped the learner make those decisions without prompts.

Local Knowledge

Lessons can use residential and suburban roads around Tamworth, Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield, followed by busier routes around Kingstanding and Erdington and faster A-road sections between the covered areas.

Abi prepares learners for Kingstanding, Garretts Green and Wednesbury Driving Test Centres. Practice focuses on lane positioning, changing speed limits, multi-lane roundabouts and forward planning rather than memorising test routes.

Training Car

Abi teaches in a hybrid automatic Toyota Yaris with dual controls, a reverse camera and parking sensors. Learners use these systems as aids while maintaining effective all-round observation.

Common Questions About Learning with Abi

I have driven for years overseas. How will Abi decide what I actually need to relearn?

Abi can ask you to explain your decisions while she observes your control, mirrors, positioning, speed and planning. She then separates safe transferable skills from habits that do not fit UK road layouts or test expectations, so the lesson does not automatically begin at novice level.

I understand roundabout rules but still choose the lane too late. What would Abi work on?

She can compare your current approach with the information available earlier on the road. Practice would focus on reading signs and markings sooner, choosing a lane before the last moment and planning the exit, followed by repetition on different layouts until you no longer need a prompt.

Can Abi help if my main problem is observation rather than controlling the car?

Yes. She may ask you to describe what you noticed and why you made the decision. This helps identify whether a mirror check, road sign, vehicle, pedestrian or developing hazard was missed, and turns a general instruction to “observe more” into a specific change.

Can I use Cantonese to explain an overseas driving habit that is difficult to describe in English?

Yes. Abi teaches in Cantonese, Mandarin and English. You can use the language that makes the comparison clearest, while the practical work remains focused on applying the correct observation and decision process on UK roads.

I already have a UK practical test booked. Can Abi guarantee I will be ready in time?
